In 1997, Charly began experimenting with a much looser style. The first four of these were signed ‘Chapa.' A trip to Mexico crystallized Charly's desire for an alter ego and ‘Carlos' was born. Much less figurative than his work up to this point, ‘Carlos' allowed Charly to experiment with bold strokes of paint and whimsical themes.
